What Counts as “All-Natural”? (And What Doesn’t)

At first glance, it might seem like a simple distinction—either a sofa is natural or it isn’t. But once you start looking closer, you realize it’s more nuanced than that. Most pieces fall somewhere in between, which is why it helps to understand what an all-natural sofa is actively avoiding, and what materials to look for instead to sniff out the fakes.

In general, a truly all-natural sofa steers clear of:

  • Polyester or microfiber upholstery
  • Polyurethane foam cushions (aka memory foam)
  • Chemical flame retardants or synthetic finishes

Instead, it relies on a tighter, more intentional palette of materials—ones that have been used in furniture making for generations.

1. Natural Upholstery Fabrics

Let’s start with the part you see and feel every day. Upholstery is often where brands lean hardest into the “all-natural” story—but it’s also where things can get a little misleading.

You’ll frequently come across sofas described as “linen” or “cotton,” which sounds straightforward enough. But in reality, many of these fabrics are blended with synthetics to improve durability or reduce cost. Make sure to always check the blend and percentage of each fabric - it's one thing if a sofa is mixed between cotton and hemp, and another if it's part cotton and part polyester.

If you’re looking for the real thing, these are the materials that define natural upholstery:

  • Cotton – soft, breathable, and familiar
  • Linen (flax) – airy, textured, and slightly relaxed in feel
  • Wool – resilient, insulating, and naturally durable
  • Silk – refined and delicate
  • Leather – natural, though more heavily processed

Each of these brings a different kind of texture and character—but they all share one thing in common: they come from nature, not a lab.

2. Cushion Fill: Where Synthetics Hide

If upholstery is what draws you in, the cushion fill is where the real story unfolds. This is the layer most people don’t think about—and ironically, it’s where the majority of synthetic materials tend to hide.

Even sofas marketed as “natural” often rely on polyurethane foam at their core, simply because it’s cheap, consistent, and easy to manufacture at scale.

All-natural sofas take a different approach. Instead of foam, they build a seat that's fit to last using materials like:

  • Natural latex (derived from rubber tree sap)
  • Wool batting
  • Down or feather fills
  • Cotton padding

These materials behave differently than foam—they feel a bit more organic, a bit less uniform—but that’s part of the appeal.

3. Frame & Structure

By the time you get to the frame, you’re fully beneath the surface—but it’s just as important as anything you can see.

A sofa’s structure determines how it holds up over time, and whether it stays true to that “all-natural” philosophy all the way through.

Typically, you’ll want to look for things like:

  • Solid wood frames (ideally kiln-dried hardwood)
  • Natural or low-VOC adhesives
  • Jute webbing or traditional support systems instead of synthetic mesh

These details aren’t always advertised front and center, but they make a meaningful difference in both longevity and material integrity. If you're worried - always feel like you can ask their customer service teams to get to the bottom of deceptive marketing with direct questions that speak to adhesives and wood sourcing.

So, What Should You Look For?

By this point, you might be wondering how to actually apply all of this when you’re shopping or evaluating a piece. The answer isn’t to memorize every material—it’s to know what signals to pay attention to.

As a general rule, a more genuinely all-natural sofa will prioritize:

  • 100% natural upholstery (no hidden blends)
  • Natural latex or down cushions (instead of polyurethane foam)
  • Minimal chemical treatments or finishes
  • Certifications like GOTS when available

Think of it less like a checklist you have to perfect, and more like a set of guideposts that help you get closer to the kind of piece you want. With this knowledge, we hope you are more empowered to make the choice that is right for you and your family. Happy shopping!
